Mandates of Portuguese Experts at UNESCO:

  • António Pedro Barbas Homem, an expert in the field of education law, has been successively elected since 2007 as a member of the Conciliation and Good Offices Commission in Charge of Settling Disputes that may arise between States Parties to the Convention on Combating Discrimination in the Field of Education.
  • Paula Martinho da Silva, a lawyer and expert in bioethics issues, is one of the 36 members of the International Bioethics Committee (IBC) for the period 2018-2021. Together with the other independent experts, she oversees the progress of research in the field of life sciences and their applications, while ensuring respect for the principles of the dignity and freedom of the human person.
  • Helena Mateus Jerónimo, Professor at different universities, has been appointed for the mandate from 2020 to 2023 of UNESCO's World Commission on Ethics in Scientific Knowledge and Technologies (COMEST), being one of the 18 members of this structure.
