Ambassador to UNESCO, 2018-2021

  

António Sampaio da Nóvoa (Valença, 1954) holds a PhD in Educational Sciences from the University of Geneva, Switzerland (1986) and a PhD in Modern and Contemporary History from the University of Paris IV-Sorbonne (2006).

His life as a university lecturer began at the University of Geneva as an assistant in 1982. From 1986, he entered the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences of the University of Lisbon, having become a full professor in 1996. He is a visiting professor at several international universities, namely Wisconsin (1993/1994), Paris V (1995), Oxford (2001), Columbia - New York (2002), Brasília (2014) and Federal do Rio de Janeiro (2017).

Between 1996 and 1999, he was a consultant for education matters at the Casa Civil of the President of the Republic Jorge Sampaio. Between 2000 and 2003, he was President of the International Standing Conference for the History of Education (ISCHE). In 2012, he chairs the commemorations of the Day of Portugal, of Camões and of the Portuguese Communities.

Between 2006 and 2013, he was Rector of the University of Lisbon, leading the process of merging the University of Lisbon and the Technical University of Lisbon

In 2014, he was in Brazil on an international mission of UNESCO to the Brazilian Government. He has an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Algarve (2015), the University of Brasília (2015), the Lusófona University (2016), the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (2017) and the Federal University of Santa Maria (2019).

In 2016, he is an independent candidate in the presidential elections, having obtained 23% of the votes.

From April 2018 to November 2021, he was the Permanent Representative of Portugal to UNESCO.
